Welcome to my weekly email, where you, the subscribers, are informed, entertained, and blessed.
This week was amazing! And then insane!
First, we were walking and knocking on doors all day in the heat. We do it in storms, crazy weather, all the time. As a wise missionary from Alaska once said, "every no is just another coin in the miracle jar". So the next day we are doing the same thing and we stop by a lady's home - and she hasn't lived there for a long time apparently, but the family inside is excited to hear about Christ's Gospel! They are amazing and we are so excited to teach them! That's the first miracle. And then we continue on our day and knock on this man's door, who doesn't answer until the 3rd knock (the most effective, and loud knock). Pretty sure we woke him up, but he asked questions about what we do, what we personally believe, and what that would mean for him. And we are going to be meeting with him as well! 2 major miracles in the same day!
Saturday was one of my companions birthdays! So we made cake the night before and did nails, as one does. We went running and saw the blackest clouds I've ever seen coming in - storms happen a lot. So we have cake for breakfast, do studies, and then the tornado sirens go off! The wind and rain immediately pick up, like 70mph rain (sorry to all my kilometer friends, I don't know the immediate translation). The power is flickering off and on, so we run to the basement of our apartment where we spend the next hour or so! On a good note, we got to know a lot of our neighbors and hear their life stories! Once the sirens and rain seem to stop for good, we see our town is wrecked. The tree outside our place was struck by lightning, every other tree around is split, torn out of the ground, fallen on power lines, blocking the roads, or on homes. Power went out everywhere for 60 miles around it seems. However, it was amazing service opportunities!! People let you help a lot more when everyone's already helping their neighbors. We picked up a lot of giant branches, and were able to drive through where the tornado touched down in a neighboring town. Mainly trees and power lines were affected. Now also remember that this day is Holly's baptism!! The member that was supposed to take us that evening cancelled at the last second, and I have never been so heart broken in my life. We tried lots of people and options, but we weren't able to make it:/ so they found someone else to speak at her baptism last second, and I was able to call Holly at least! It was a rollercoaster train wreck day, happy birthday to my companion haha!
Yesterday we started moving all of our salvageable food to another apartment that has power since we lost most of our food. The power needs to be rebuilt in most of the town so they predicted a few days of no power. But we got home last night to grab last minute things and I see my neighbors light on! We have power again! So only like 30 hours without power.
Also most importantly, I finished the Book of Mormon this week! I have an indescribable love for this book, it is true in all forms, it brings the most peace, and it helps me to feel of my Savior's love! One of my favorite things is in its introduction: Joseph Smith testifies that "a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book". He doesn't say by simply reading you'll be blessed, but by ABIDING and following its teachings! I invite all of you to read and abide by its teachings, that is where the promise is! I hope you all are well! I am so excited to continue the work at this time, and I love all the scriptures I can constantly study! I am so grateful for a perfectly loving Heavenly Father, the Atonement and Jesus Christ, and for the words of so many who testify of the Saviors Gospel!
I would love to hear from you all!
Love,
Sister Davis
